STAFFORDIAN
Staffordian

As a native of Staffordshire I wanted to create a unique piece which had lots of local interest, the fact that the dragon was sculpted and produced in the UK almost unique these days, sadly, but I wanted to make it just that little bit more special.

The dragon itself represents a recent but nevertheless strong tradition of fantasy figurine production that grew out of the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent in the late 1980's and became a global phenomenon during the next ten years.

Featured on the base of the piece are a beer bottle representing the Burton brewing industry, keys depicting the UK lock-making industry which started in South Staffordshire. Also featured are a teapot, plate & staffordshire porcelain dog representing the Potteries, the propeller from the Spitfire (the famous WWII fighter plane designed by Reginald Mitchell of Stoke), and even a miniature traffic cone from the (in)famous M6! The dragon is also standing on a lump of coal, another of Staffordshires great exports.
